EMPATHY - Starter

a) I think the boy feels sad. He'd much rather be doing fun things, with his family or friends, but he accepts that his parents had no choice when he sent him here, and that he needs to work if his family was going to survive. He's tired and bored. Tired of working so hard, angry at the way his life is. He feels lots of mixed feelings.

b) I think the boy dreams of being able to be free and he hopes that one day he will have earned enough money so that he can spend fun times with his family and friends. In the cartoon, he dreams about playing football and having a good time. With his friends and family he would have lots of fun.

c) There are lots of programs to help child labour all around the world, such as IPEC (International Program to Eliminate Child Labour). Also you could donate money to the families of the countries that support child labour, these countries/continents are Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America.

  1. Very mature answers Olivia. You have used your learning and understanding to empathise with the boy, and his family's potential situation.
What message do you think the cartoonist to convey?
